If you love taxes, read no further.
Just like the plot of a horror story, it is tax season again. The time for another year of insanity as we try to comply with the laws of the evil overlords – the IRS and Congress. Congress is actually the most evil. They draft this stuff up, the president signs it into law, and the IRS is the enforcer. Now I want to understand the meaning of the declaration of independence, which reads:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Let’s dissect this a little bit.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, I guess the financial collapse of 2008 was self evident, we just were not paying attention to it. Do not be fooled, there was a party going on all the way from DC to the individual mortgage lenders, everybody wanted a piece of the action.
All men are created equal. Are you sure? If true, then why do politicians side one class against another? Both sides are drawing a bitter hard line and enemies are entrenching.
Endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. Notice the disclaimer “certain?” That’s left ambiguous so that whoever the creators might be in power in Congress can decide your “certain” unalienable rights. When you elect someone, you have given your rights to someone else.
Life, Liberty… Since when did preparing tax returns add to the quality of anyone’s life? Do you actually look forward to April 15th every year? Liberty is defined as:
“The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life.” I’ll let you determine if you feel oppressed.
Finally, the pursuit of Happiness. Would you be happy not to have to file a tax return, hire an accountant, attorney, buy software, etc.? And, if you just happen to be one of the millions who have been hit hard over the last few years by the actions of our overlords, they pour salt on to your wounds by sending the dungeon master to inflict more pain and suffering. Are you happy, are you in pursuit, or are you being pursued?
So as April 15th draws near, take time to reflect on the founding fathers intent for our country. In the beginning; revenues were derived from excise taxes, tariffs, and customs duties. Individuals rarely had any interaction with the government. Ah, the good old days, the original consumption system. The tax system remains in effect today for a very simple reason – it is the source of power for those that hold majority. It can be and is used to wield and engineer action by the masses. It is used to create jobs and spur consumption. It conjures ideas of injustice and inequality.
Now as you move forward from year to year, pay closer attention to a politician’s stance on taxes. With eyes wide open, you just might see the dark and sinister plot of our overlords against your “Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.”
